Jonathon Porritt launches Green Euro election campaign in South West

13 March 2009

Jonathon Porritt and Ricky Knight South West Greens launched their European election campaign today with the help of Jonathon Porritt, the well-known environmental campaigner. Jonathon joined the six candidates in Bristol as they placed their bid to get the South West its first Green MEP. The campaign launch focused on how voters have a real chance to elect a Green MEP due to the fairer voting system used for the European elections on June 4th this year.

Ricky Knight, lead Euro candidate for the South West Green Party, said: "We only need a few extra percent to return the first ever Green MEP for the South West. If roughly 1 in 10 voters in the South West vote Green on June 4th, we'll have a new Green voice in Europe for our region.

"Greens do not have agendas set by corporations and unelected bodies. We believe that open, transparent government is the only way to tackle the challenges we face now, such as the state of the economy and climate change. We need to take immediate and positive action to solve these problems and ensure a stable and sustainable future.

"The South West has huge potential to become a thriving green economy, with its miles of coastline, vibrant cities and agricultural expertise. A Green MEP would work tirelessly to make that potential a reality."

Explaining why you should vote Green, Jonathon said:

"If you dithered about voting for the Green Party before, what can possibly be stopping you this time round? Our two MEPs are the best in the European Parliament, and make a real and lasting difference. We've been proved right on every major issue over the last 20 years or more. We're facing a total meltdown of the global economy, and climate change is running away with us – and nobody's doing very much about it. So in terms of voting Green: if not now, when exactly? And if not you, why not?"
