Green Wave Washes Over France

Green Wave washes over France

The French Green Party has continued its success in the second round of municipal elections

The French Green Party, Europe Ecologie Les Verts (EELV), has been building on the success of the first round of municipal elections in 2020. The second round was scheduled to be held in March but was postponed due to the global COVID-19 pandemic.

This latest round has seen the Greens win 8 out of 10 major cities. As a result they now hold mayoralty in Lyon, Bordeaux, Strasbourg, Besançon, Poitiers, Annecy, Tours and Grenoble.

Shortly after, Marseilles announced a new EELV mayor and their first female leader, Michèle Rubirola. This is also notable because the city has been held by a right-wing mayor since 1995.

These Municipal Election successes follow the EELV coming in third nationally within the 2019 European elections.

The Green Wave is growing, and the UK could be next in the 2021 local elections. Find out more about how to get involved here.
